This week has been the one week out of the year that I, and many other moms dread: The week your babysitter takes off. I don’t begrudge her of it, since mine is a workaholic and only takes one week off a year, but she DID go the Keys! I’m way jealous, even though I don’t have this for Florida. I was even born there. Have no desire to go back, but this week was so bitterly cold, I might reconsider. Her time off has come at a great time of the year, since Matt is not typically busy during February. But he had his usual Thursday morning meeting and we had to figure out what to do with the kids, since I’m now working full-time. Enter: Grandma!
Matt dropped the girls off Wednesday afternoon. My mom lives almost 40 miles from us, so dropping them off for a sleepover with grandma made perfect sense! Which meant that Matt and I would have the house to ourselves…..well with 3 puppies and two adult Saints. What could we do? Then Matt calls to tell me that his truck is ready to be picked up from the body shop. He was in an accident two weeks ago, he’s fine, but his truck had close to $7000 damage. And I was stuck driving the rental mini van (Hello? Can you say “Mommymobile” and LOUDER?). So I go and drop that off to him at his office and take my truck home. And now it’s time to get puppies in, feed the other two outside and get my house dogs in. And it’s almost zero degrees out with a wind chill well below…….and it’s getting dark. I don’t do well in dark. Dark, scary, coyote laden, creepy woods and wide open yard spaces. So I go out and do all of this and I’m a literal Popsicle by the time I’m done. Matt did make it home and we had some really yummy frozen pizza for dinner with nice big glasses of milk. And then we sat down to watch TV. I can just see it now:
“So, what did you and Matt do last night with no kids in the house?”
“We watched the show about the Colossal Squid. Then we briefly touched on about 15 minutes of Lost, in which I was the whole time I watched it. I can’t even follow the Pelican Brief movie, how the heck am I suppose to follow all these characters that travel in time?”
And then we went to bed.
