There was something about today that just wasn’t sitting right this past Monday. I had an eye appointment for today that was canceled on Monday. Rowan had an appointment with the pediatrician today that was canceled yesterday. Kind of odd don’t you think? Two doctors appointments canceled for the same day, not by me. I was just thinking that there was something about Wednesday. It is the 13th. Now, I’m not too superstitious, but I’m really thinking about changing that soon.
At 6:25 am this morning, I was awoken to a very light tapping on the door followed by Patsy barking her head off. I was in the middle of a dream and not quite “together” yet. I was thinking, “Dear God, what does Kim need now?” Kim is our neighbor, the only person I know that would stop by at that hour of the morning. So the tapping went on, and it became apparent to me that it wasn’t Kim, because she would have been yelling through the windows at us. I let the dogs into the kitchen and Patsy immediately bolts for the door and is really barking in her Kujo bark and she jumps on the door just in time for me to see a Sheriff’s eyebrows perk up and move defensively back a few steps. I have all these thoughts going through my head like: Can’t be Matt, he’s in bed…..Can’t be mom or dad, they’re in different states….My brother? So I open the door and squeeze out so the dogs don’t get out and the Sheriff says, “That’s one big dog you have there.” I smile and reply, “And if I let you in, she would lick you to death. She’s all bark.” He chuckles, so do I. So he says, “You know that your neighbor’s house burned to the ground last night?” Now, I know I just hopped out of bed, but what? We heard no sirens, smelled no smoke at all. Granted, the house was about 3 acres away from us on the other side of the road, but we knew nothing. It actually was fully engulfed at 4 am this morning when our neighbor ran back to his house before work to feed the cows. The Sheriff told me that his daughter-in-law just had a baby last night, that’s why they weren’t home. Can you f’in imagine? Coming home to find your house fully engulfed at 4 in the morning?
My heart sunk because he is the nicest guy. He moved into the house a couple of years ago when the previous owner passed away of cancer. He raises beef cattle and pigs and works somewhere else. This past winter he started plowing our driveway. He came over one day with his big tractor and my other neighbor, Mike, and just started plowing. I remember yelling to Mike, “I don’t have any cash to pay him!” and Mike was like, “Don’t worry about it!” He would come over after every snow storm last year, without asking and plow and wouldn’t take any money. He would always say that he liked to “play on his tractor and help people out”. He and his wife are okay, the cat was unaccounted for the last time I talked to Kim (Mike’s wife).
So now I’m starting to wonder about today. Just not a good day. I put together a Pepperoni Casserole for him and baked some bread so he and his wife can eat good tonight. His wife has a house (they were recently married, like a few weeks ago and were in the process of moving into his house) that they can stay in. It’s just sad that these things have to happen.
