The Cast Drama

by Amy D on July 3, 2008

This past Tuesday was the day to get Brenna’s cast off. I think we were all looking forward to that day, even Matt wanted to take her to the playground. I was like, no, the kid ain’t going to be walking that fast.

I thought they were going to x-ray her leg before the cast came off, but I was wrong. They decided to cut the cast off first. Which was not fun to witness and set the stage for the remainder of the visit there. The tears came out, the shouting, the screaming and kicking. Matt had to hold her and I admit, looked pretty scary to me. So the cast is now off and she really can’t put her leg straight because her knee has been bent for some time now. My friend, Barb, who I didn’t know worked there, came out to get her for the x-ray. And she was still in full screaming mode. Matt had to come in and stay with her in the room and I went behind the control booth. I saw the other young girl who did her x-rays last time and asked her why she didn’t want to do them again, with a laugh. And she shook her head no and smirked and said, “She’s a tough one.” Yeah, I kind of know. Live with it. So Barb comes back behind the booth for a picture and she looks at me and says, “You have another one of these at home?” I say yes and when I say I’m not pregnant, I actually MEAN it. Ain’t going to happen again!

The pictures start popping up on the screen (which is really cool to me because they didn’t have this stuff when I did x-ray) and I notice either the same fracture and it’s going higher or another fracture that’s higher than the original one. Immediately, I’m like oh shit. Here comes another cast. This sucks. The original fracture was healing, it was a brighter white than the rest of her bones, but there was a spiraling fracture above it. And my heart sunk. I tried to prepare her before this visit by saying they might take her cast off. I always knew there was a possibility of it not coming off, but really didn’t believe it myself.

The Doctor confirmed what I had saw. He said he could just let her go without a cast and hopefully she’ll walk on it, or he could put her in a walking cast. So a walking cast it is. This cast goes from below her knee to her toes. And she has a cute little walking boot. She, of course, screamed through that. I’ve just come to expect it. Can’t set your expectations too high or you’ll get let down.

And then we went to Friendly’s for lunch and had ice cream and mommy took her shopping. And she showed off her HOT PINK cast to everyone!

Poor baby! Its so awful when we have to put our kids through stuff like that. At least its a temporary thing. I guess I missed what happened originally.

Tell her to get better soon!
